I own a 725 planer/moulder and am trying to make some mouldings. I am completely unhappy with the results because I am getting chatter marks on the mouldings. I found there is up & down movement on the front of the planer bed. I tried tightening down on the piece of steel that supports the top of the jack screws but it didn't make a difference. I noticed that the one jack screw actually has play in the threads where it screws into the bed. Has anybody else had this problem and if so how did you fix it.

Tazzman, Thanks for joining. Making sure the table is tight is the first thing to check, next I would look at the bed itself, is it solid? I like to use a piece of 3/4 MDF under the polybed board. finally you need to keep the stock tight in the side guides, I sometimes use a guide with a little slight bow in it, this guide squeezes the stock tight directly under the cutter head. If these don't help post back a we'll try something else. Thanks, Justin

check your rollers and make sure they are not bent. i had a 725 with these issues. place a square next to the rollers one at a time and turn the feed on and see if they're true. i had to place washers between the tie bars and jack posts to take up some slack also on my 712. i use dedicated plywood bedboards for my most popular mouldings. i think the poly board flexes to much.

I checked the bed and it moves up and down alittle in the front right corner where it is attached to the jack screw. I'm not sure if that is acceptable. I did place a extra washer on top of the jack screws but it still moves. Should there be any movement in the table?
I will try your suggestion of putting 3/4" MDF under the poly board. I checked the rollers and they are straight.

no, any movement on the table will show in the stock.

Thanks for every bodies response. I did contact Woodmaster and they are suggesting to try a few things. So far no cure. I have changed the belts to the link style, put washers under the jack posts and am using a plywood bed board. Still have chatter marks.
I tried planing a piece with no bed board and the marks you can actually feel with your fingers. I'm still working with Woodmaster so I'll see what they suggest next.

i did the hinged motor thing with my machine. it sure makes getting the belts on and off a little easier. i can't say it made any noticable difference in the quality of my mouldings. however, one thing hinging the motor will do is cause the bearings to run hot. that's not a good thing. the big key to getting good mouldings is keeping the stock tight to the bedboard and guide rails. if i'am running a profile that does not leave much material against the feed rollers, i'll make a second and maybe even a third pass.
