Hi, I recently purchased one of these machines and have been using it and getting used to it recently. I have done some planing (with pretty good results) as well as some mouldings.
My goal was to utilize the machine to supplement my desk job, as I work from home. What I am finding so far is that there is a lot more too it than first meets the eye as far as the steps involved in making a good moulding. Have so far just made a few for a local cabinet shop and am unsure about how far it will go.
Would like to know if any others are utilizing their machine for income generation/ business purposes?

Although I only have 718 planers. I cut a lot of trim/molding, flooring, and S4S stock. (S4S stock is about the only thing you can do and compete with Lowe's etc.) One way to get great work is to market to higher end builders. Thats who will buy select and/or wide flooring and custom trim. The only bad part of it is its lots of leg work and more that your fair share of thanks but no thanks. Do worry you'll find what fits best for you.

Kevin:
I got delivery of my 718 last week and am starting to get it set up in my shop. I too am wondering how to start making money off this.
I see that Justin does some planing and some molding, but my contacts are somewhat limited. Yes, I have made and sold cabinets, but selling molding is something that I am not used to - trying to drum-up business for a "part" that will be used in the total package that I might be doing (i.e., kitchen makeover, etc.).
Any thoughts?

how about making some sample boards, with short lengths of different moldings, different woods, and giving them to higher end builders & remodelers - with your contact info prominent, of course! Also, posting on craigslist if you have it in your area might get you some business. woodcpl

craigslis has been great for me. Make sure you post picture in your ad. I've sold a ton of log siding the past month or so. The only bad thing about it is that people on craigslist are cheap. This year I'll take cheap over nothing any day.
